LeapSmart Founder Monica Levy began her LeapSmart journey as an award-winning professional choreographer. She served as artist-in-residence at Robert Redford's Sundance Institute and studied dance at the legendary Joffrey Ballet School, the School of American Ballet and the Alvin Ailey School. Given LeapSmart's blend of fun and action, it won't surprise anyone that she also thrilled audiences at the Big Apple Circus in New York City through her work with Big Apple's clowns! She won the prized Fulbright Award, several National Endowment for the Arts awards and had her work performed in the prestigious Spoleto Festival. She's also received national and international recognition for performances commissioned by European dance companies in London, Budapest, and Portugal, and for numerous performances commissioned by American dance companies including the Boston Ballet and Washington Ballet. She says "Even when I was creating complex dances for international audiences, I always found ways to work with kids. I just loved the way kids responded to dance. You could practically see their minds expanding." Monica honed her talents in blending movement and learning at schools including Philips/Andover, the elite prep school, and Hartford Ballet, an exclusive youth dance academy. Through Lincoln Center's outreach program, she also introduced dance to children and teachers from urban public schools in culturally diverse communities. “That showed me that I could bring learning through movement to kids of all ages and backgrounds. It's a way to jump-start the learning process for all kids." Thus began the LeapSmart program, which today teaches thousands of kids every year how to "Leap, Learn, and Achieve!"
Monica Levy is a Level 2 Credentialed Trainer awarded by the NYS Association for the Education of Young Children.
